Darkness
Darkness… Darkness… Darkness… The words came ringing into my mind as nightfall came. Every time I hear that word it sends a chill down my spine. Never would I have thought that I would be so afraid of this darkness.
It was all because of that incident that happened. It has been five years now but I remember it as though it was only yesterday that it took place. The vivid images of that night came back into my mind once again as I look back to what had happened on that gruesome night.
“Chris! Help me! Chris you must send it back to where it came from before it kills all six of us!” Evelyn shouted as she was taken by the creature into the darkness of the night and disappeared. The air that night was very chilly and I just stood there staring into the darkness. The lights from the street lamps came back once the creature had left. This seemed to happen every time. When it comes all the lights will seem to die off and after it leaves the lights will return.
It was two weeks ago. We stumbled upon an ancient book of magic and curses when we were punished to clean an old underground level storeroom. The place was covered at every single corner with dust as thick as our textbooks. We were grumbling and cursing our discipline teacher the whole time.
That night all six of us gathered at Charlie’s room at our school’s dormitory. We opened the book we found and each of us took turns reading out the names and description of the many spells in the book. It was when it came to Rachel’s turn again that we stopped. She had read the perfect spell we needed to get back at our teacher for punishing us and making us clean that horrid place.
For a moment, the six of us just sat there silently. Each one of us was staring at one another waiting for some one to say that this is the perfect spell, the Spell of Summoning Creatures of the Dark. Finally, the leader of our little group, Bernard, spoke up and everyone agreed.
We flipped through the many choices of creatures that were illustrated in the book. Each creature had a different description and each a different purpose. A decision was made. The creature of our choice had not its original name but there was an English translation written just below the place where the name was to be. ‘… a name which means The Demon of Darkness’.
The next night we brought everything we needed and gathered at the school’s basketball court because we needed a big space. Everything was set up according to the book and we sat in a circle just as in the book. It was a six-part incantation spell so everyone took turns saying the incantation. After each incantation, the reader had to put the item needed into the fire in the middle. Everyone took turns starting from Bernard, followed by Evans, Charlie, Evelyn, Rachel and me.
After the final incantation had been said and the final item had been added in, the fire in the middle began to grow bigger and sparks began flying. Suddenly, the fire spilt into six tongues of flame one at each of us. Then a great creature measuring about 8 feet came out from the centre of the flames. It had four arms and a very hideous face. Its mouth was like a crocodile’s jaw and claws like dinosaur’s. It had six eyes around its head and seemed to have no ears. It filled the night with a loud roar and swallowed the flames it was standing on.
It stood there looking at us, as thought waiting for us to give it a command. Bernard told it what we wanted it to do. The creature then gave a loud roar and jumped over us and disappeared into the darkness. The next day, news spread throughout the whole school that the discipline teacher was dead. Someone had stabbed three holes into his heart. The holes looked like some dinosaur’s claw.
The six of us got a big shock. Our orders were to teach him a lesson not to kill him. We thought that it was all over and decided to move on but it was not. A week after the first attack, another teacher was killed. The students and teachers of the school were very afraid. We then decided to use the unsummoning spell that was written at the end of the spell page.
Everything was set that night and we started the incantation. Half way through the spell the creature appeared and all the lights around us went out. It came and stood in the middle of us and we continued to read the incantation. Before we could finish the spell, the creature in the middle started to make weird noises and suddenly jumped on Bernard. We did not know what to do. He was already screaming for help.
Crash! My dog is chasing the neighbour’s cat once again. I suddenly felt I could not continue looking back, remembering what had happened. Looking at the time it is already 10 o’clock at night. It is pitch black outside because of the faulty streetlights that comes on whenever it likes. I had complained about it before to the city council but action has been taken. Once again a chill runs down my spine just by looking out the window into the dark streets. Closing the windows, I went and lie down on the bed and closed my eyes.
The creature killed Bernard then lunged towards Evans. Charlie tried to hit it with a long piece of wood that was on the floor. When it did not even scratch the creature, Charlie ran away screaming at the top of his voice. I grabbed Evelyn and Rachel’s hands and started running away. Evans scream filled the air when the creature ripped out his heart.
Evelyn, Rachel and me ran together till we reached the outside of the school’s compound. We only took a moment to catch our breath, then we continued running till we reached a nearby police station. We knew that our normal weapons are not able to hurt the creature so we did not even bother to make a police report. We knew we needed to finish the spell and send it back. Evelyn had grabbed the book when we ran away so we could still do the spell.
Using a piece of chalk I drew the sign and started a fire in the middle. I began reading the incantation. Once again the creature appeared and stood in the middle of the sign. I read as fast as I could. Knowing that the creature will suddenly go crazy, I was careful as I approached the last part of the spell. Same as before it went crazy but it didn’t attack me. Instead it went for Evelyn who was the fourth person to read the summoning incantation.
She screamed and I started to chase after her and the creature but she shouted at me, asking me to finish the incantation. I did as she said and continued reading but with eyes full of tears. When I finally finished the spell the creature appeared out of the darkness and was pulled into the fire. This time the lights did not go out. The creature was swallowed by the fire and had been destroyed.
Rachel and I took the book of magic and curses to the middle of a nearby forest and buried the book there, hoping that no one will ever find that book ever again. We continued our studies with this dreadful experience in our minds. We had to continue living, not only for ourselves but also for our friends that had died.
Ever since that incident, darkness has always terrified Rachel and me. We could never forget what happened. Five years after the incident Rachel and I got married. We always tell our children this story just to scare them and make them be good.
I felt tired and fell asleep beside my wife that night with the lights on. The faces of all my closest friends came into my mind and gave me a peaceful sleep that night.
